Description/Story:

Zuciya, filled with worry, headed to Oum's section, seeing that it was already past ten at night, and Maanal still hadn't returned to her section. As for AA, his body had somewhat recovered, and now some more fluid had been drained from him. Noticing her absence in the living room, he went to her bedroom. He greeted her, and she responded, granting him permission to enter, so he went in. The way she was sitting, her face full of distress, made his own face fall, even though he understood the troubling situation Auta was in.

“Oum, did you sleep well?”

He spoke with deep concern, moving closer to sit near her. She only stared at him, and any attempt to smile or ease her worries failed completely. Even the little moisture gathered in her eyes was noticeable. Truly, Zuciya became even more unsettled.

Her hand reached out, shaking his head. “See, calm yourself, it’s nothing serious.”

“Come on, Oum, how can you say that? Look at how clearly the worry is written on your face. For God’s sake, even if it’s just Auta’s pain, stop distressing yourself—everything will pass as if it never happened, God willing. Right now, he’s even sleeping, and they’ve removed his IV since it was almost done. His body shows no pain, and seeing how he’s resting, thank God, there’s no worry like yesterday or today. Now, I came about Maanal—will she sleep there tonight since her body is still recovering?”

Oum’s frustration became even more evident on her face. She said, “About that—Abanku has upset me greatly, Fadeel. He said I can’t go back there now, not until after prayer, when he teaches Ajwaad some sense. What sense does that boy even need to learn after what he’s already been through? Forget the past years of hardship and pain—just these past few days, look at the state he’s in now. Everyone has their own struggles and destiny, but Abanku refuses to understand that. He doesn’t realize Ajwaad has deep emotions. The importance Maanal holds for him—I never thought he’d have to say it out loud for it to be acknowledged. Does he want me to lose my child because of his stubbornness?” Her voice trembled as if she were about to burst into tears.

Extremely agitated, Zuciya began shaking his head, his own eyes darting nervously. “For God’s sake, Oum, calm yourself. I’ll go talk to him now. Or you can call Baba or Abba and discuss it with them—”

“Because I’m not enough in my own house? Or is it because I’m not the mother?”

Startled, Zuciya and Oum turned quickly to look at him. Abah stepped into the room, his expression filled with deep resentment as he continued, “Because you need to play the role of my mother and call my parents to mediate for me? Truly, Fadeel, hello—no, I mean, hello to you too!”

“Be patient, Abah, that’s not what I meant. But Oum—”

“Teacher, get up and leave. We’ll talk in the morning.”

Abah cut him off sharply, his displeasure evident. Zuciya glanced at Oum, his eyes flickering nervously again, and she subtly signaled for him to leave. So he simply stood and headed for the door.

As Abah’s gaze followed him, he shook his head in his heart, thinking (They act as if their mother is dead—as if they don’t care at all). Clearly frustrated, he turned his attention back to Oum, who had withdrawn to the side of the room as if she didn’t even notice his presence. Just as she was about to reach out, he already knew what she would do, so he commanded firmly, “Sit back down.”

She sat back down. Before she could lift her eyes—which flickered nervously for the first time—to look at him, he started fidgeting with his face, even giving her a sharp look that made her quickly lower her gaze. Then he said, “Oh, so now, because I made a decision that was best for your child, you got angry with me, called your elder son, and informed him to hold a family meeting about me, all because I’m not enough to handle things my way?”
