Description/Story:

Around the area, students were scattered—some standing, others sitting—but their numbers made it hard to tell if they were in lines. The large open space behind the ICT center of the school was filled with students struggling to get through. The students were from different courses; some chatted, while others were tired from standing, all waiting for their turn in line, each holding their credentials. It was clear they were all seeking admission.

Most of the girls sat, some leaning against each other.

Near the roadside, a parked car turned slightly, and a bearded man called out, "Hey, Khadeejah, is this your school? All these people you see here are admission seekers like you. Now, you’ll have to join them and ask for your department to get in line."

Her mouth went dry with fear as she thought, "How? With this huge crowd, if they haven’t even received their admission letters yet, how will I get mine today?"

The bearded man added, "Well, not everyone is in the same course. Each department is different, so when you go, you’ll see each group has its own window."

"Then how do I go back?" she asked, opening the car door to step out.

The man took out 2,000 naira and handed it to her. "Take this and keep it in case you need extra money or if you get hungry, so you can make it till evening."

She took it, saying, "Thank you so much."

Slowly, she moved toward the crowd. The sheer number of people intimidated her. On the side where the girls were sitting, she greeted them, "As-salamu alaykum." Some responded, while others kept their heads down, and a few gave her the kind of look reserved for a sister, especially one who was overly dressed.

Clearing her throat nervously, she said, "Excuse me, I have a question."

"Okay, may Allah help us know," one replied.

"Please, I’m looking for the Arabic department."

"Honestly, you should move a bit further ahead and ask there. They’re not here."

She walked a little farther and asked again. A girl sitting nearby said, "Come here."

Khadeejah moved closer and sat with her, shaking her hand in greeting. The girl said, "I’m also an Arabic student waiting to collect my admission letter."

Looking at her carefully, Khadeejah said, "Okay, so you’re my sister. All these girls here are from our department," she added, pointing to the others nearby. They exchanged greetings.

They continued sitting together, waiting for the letters to be distributed.
