A disturbance erupted as a young girl, barely sixteen years old, emerged from a black SUV. She was dressed in a long school uniform, her face half-hidden behind oversized sunglasses, making it hard to see her clearly. In a sharp tone, she called out, "Safwan! Safwan!" The household staff froze, lining up with their heads bowed, watching her through the tinted glass as she demanded, "Where is Safwan?"  

Silence fell over them, filled with unease. They exchanged glances, thinking, *Today, Safwan has really crossed the line with this stubborn girl.* One of them finally gathered the courage to reply, "Good afternoon. He hasn’t returned from school yet."  

She stayed quiet for a moment before saying, "When he comes back, let him know I want to see him immediately." They responded, "Good afternoon," and she turned away, heading toward her room.  

She sat down, scrolling through her phone, waiting for Safwan’s arrival. When she heard footsteps, she called out, "Daughter, you’re back?" But as she turned, she saw Safwan’s tear-filled eyes through the glass. The car door opened, and she sat up abruptly. "Daughter, what’s wrong?"  

In a voice thick with anger, Safwan snapped, "Ammi, what’s wrong with him? Who does he think he is? My father pays him, but he doesn’t respect me! Today, Ammi, he had the nerve to—" She cut herself off, then continued, "Some friend of his, Abdul, saw me walking alone and blocked my path, following me all the way home! Ammi, they mocked me, laughing at me for walking by myself! Ammi, this can’t go on. The freedom my father gave him is too much. He needs to know his place—he’s just a driver in this house, not some big man! And yet, he drives me around like he owns the place!"  

She bit her lip, her chest rising and falling with barely contained fury. Ammi let out a slow breath before speaking. "Be patient, daughter. Your father will handle it. But I’ve noticed something about that boy—he doesn’t respect anyone in this house except Alhaji. No one dares to speak up to him, especially not me. Even when I try, he shuts me down. I swear, I’m afraid of him myself."  

Safwan clenched her jaw, swallowing her anger. Without another word, she stormed to her room, slamming her bag down. She tore off her uniform and stepped into the shower, letting the cold water numb her emotions. Thirty minutes later, she emerged, wrapping a towel around herself as she stood before the mirror. She applied lotion but skipped makeup, only swiping on lipstick before heading to her wardrobe. She pulled out an army-green jeans set with a ribbed T-shirt, then tied her hair up.  

Masha Allah, Safwan was stunning—her natural beauty undeniable. Her nose was perfectly sculpted, her eyes bright but not the usual light shade—more like a striking mix of hazel and gold. Without her usual hijab, she looked different, bolder.  

She walked to the dining room, expecting someone, but it was empty. She opened the food warmers—nothing had been prepared for her. Annoyed, she went to the kitchen and reheated some leftover spiced meat. After eating just enough to curb her hunger, she brushed her teeth and grabbed a book, heading to the garden to study. With an English C.A. test tomorrow, she couldn’t afford distractions. But as she read, her mind kept drifting, her emotions still unsettled.
