Description/Story:

months, then their parents will come to set the date." "What kind of tradition is this?" "You see too—the house has gone beyond that. It's just pure jealousy." "You know what amazes me?" she said. "No." "Truly, whenever we're with the princess, she's the one calling him on the phone. He never calls her." They laughed more. She said, "Prince!!! Truly the prince troubles the princess. I think their power surpasses this one." "Really? Exactly—you see power like the princess's and her pride, but truly in my ears, I feel she lowers her voice begging him not to hang up." "So he doesn't love her?" She quickly covered their mouths. "Be quiet—I didn't say that because we don't delay the king's matter in our mouths." "When is he coming?" "They said this Tuesday." "You know the noble one and his father are some kind of close friends with money, and they studied abroad together." "Where did you hear that?" "Will you ask me after our aunt who works here?" "Yes, truly. Stand up and help me fetch this pot—I'll prepare the bedding sauce." I followed her closely, absorbing their conversation into my mind before suddenly removing my slippers. I persisted in working hard without looking up until from above I saw the princess and her escort surrounding me. "My God, which one is on her right hand?" she said. "God prolong the princess's life—do you mean this one you're talking about?" Before she tried to speak, my heart pounded. Immediately, a servant came close and pulled my skirt. I thought, "What wrong did I do?" She looked at me up and down before saying, "Bring her to the room." They turned. "My God," she scared me. "Leave the men's work and come when the princess calls." Tears filled my eyes as we walked. I prayed God would save me. When we entered, she greeted everyone, and they left, leaving me with her. She looked at me sharply. "What's your name?" I said, "Humaira." She nodded. "I like your demeanor, calmness, and beauty. You have very good upbringing, truly. That's why I chose you as the one who will always take care of the prince when he comes. Only in the morning, and among the afternoon workers, I'll get one because he won't like night workers except those unavoidable. When you come in the morning, bring him water in a cup as is the house tradition. He'll wash his feet before leaving the bed, meaning after dawn prayer. You'll be the one washing around him, arranging his room, and serving him breakfast and other care until 2 p.m., before the afternoon one takes over." Joy overwhelmed me. I bowed in respect and said, "Thank you, Princess." She turned away. "You're dismissed," she said without looking at where I was. I bowed again and said, "Thank you, Princess," then stood before slowly leaving with another respectful bow. Then I continued my work.

The next day, we all focused on preparing the prince's section. Everything was decorated and new, even clothes were sewn and placed in his wardrobe. Would his clothes even come? Wow! This tradition and this power and strictness. Power is power—I saw how much he loved children. The servants' gossip increased my thoughts and guesses. "The princess controls everyone in this house," said Rabi Mamman. "Ayyo," she replied smiling. "Didn't you hear what the king told the wives of this house?" "That she's the power, so use her opinion? Where someone says no one has their own opinion except what she decides?" "That's power!"
