She sat in her mother’s room, absentmindedly removing her shoes while playing with her earrings and adjusting her bracelets. Every now and then, she poured food from the flask in front of her into her mouth. At first glance, one might think she was staring at the flask, but that wasn’t the case—her heart and soul were immersed in a different world. Hunger had entered the house, yet she couldn’t bring herself to take even a single bite.  

For days, she had been in a state she described as a trial or a calamity befalling her life. This was the fourth time in her life that her eyes had welled up with tears, turning into a disaster for her. Ever since the day she laid eyes on him, an unfamiliar feeling had visited her heart and taken over her entire being. She could describe the feeling as intense love, which had become like a burning ember in the darkness. The reason for this turmoil was someone her heart longed for—someone she wished God had not created in this world. She cried in frustration, lamenting how her heart had betrayed her by falling for someone she didn’t even know. What was his name? Where was he?  

She let out a long sigh, then grabbed the flask, opening it with the intention of forcing herself to eat something, if only to escape her mother’s scolding. Just as she was about to take a second bite, she heard her mother’s voice standing nearby, watching her.  

"Fadila, since you came in, you’ve been lost in thought, but in almost an hour, you haven’t eaten anything decent. What’s wrong?"  

Fadila frowned and said, "I swear, Mom, I’m hungry, but I just can’t eat."  

Her mother replied, "Is this how it’s going to be every day? Like some stubborn child, we have to fight over food? You better be careful—ulcers aren’t exclusive to this house. If it gets worse, you’ll regret it."  

Fadila forced a faint smile and said, "Be patient, Mom. God willing, I’ll finish this flask for you."  

Her mother, sighing in frustration, said, "My child, you’re impossible."  

Fadila suppressed a laugh that almost escaped her. As she reached the door, she turned back and said, "Oh, I forgot to tell you—prepare yourself. I’ll be staying at Alhaji Salim’s house for two nights. Let’s keep it quiet."  

She quickly grabbed her bag from the chair, slung it over her shoulder, and said, "Where’s Mom? I need to tell her too."  

Just then, her younger sister, who had overheard the conversation, chimed in, "Mom already left. She said she’s going out with your friend to buy makeup supplies. The driver will take her."  

Fadila quickly responded, "Oh, Mom, actually, I already discussed the makeup with him yesterday."  

Her mother called back, "Give me ten minutes. Meet me downstairs—I’m waiting for you."  

Fadila replied, rushing to her attached bathroom.
