She stayed silent, listening to the rising anger and bitterness in her uncle’s voice. His tone was thick with fury, exhaustion etched deep into his face—no trace of ease, mercy, or patience.  

All this rage and resentment came pouring out in front of her mother, who sat listening without interruption.  

From her mother down to her, the weight of pain was immense. Every time her mother was present during these arguments, the suffering was unbearable. No one ever stood up to defend her. The way he shouted made the veins in his neck bulge.  

As for her uncle, Bellon, his temper was always sharp, his words harsh. Every time he came, he would reopen old wounds in front of them, yet no one ever challenged him. Her mother had no choice but to endure in silence. Even Jannat, her cousin, never dared to speak up.  

This latest outburst of his, the cruelty of his words, had struck deep. Her mother’s eyes, as well as her own, welled up with tears—yet neither could let them fall in front of her uncle.  

He wiped the sweat from his forehead with the sleeve of his robe, repeating his mother’s last words:  

"I swear, if Abdulhameed dares to step foot in that sorcerer’s school again, I will drag him out myself. By God, I’ll send him to an almajiri school before I let this disgrace continue. Your brother is dead, and you refuse to move on. This is your fault! If you won’t stay where God has placed you, then gather your things and leave—we can’t take this anymore."  

With that, he turned and stormed out, leaving behind the wreckage of his tirade. He didn’t even glance back as he slammed the door of their small family section—the one their late father had left for them alone.  

Her mother let out a shaky breath and looked toward where AmatulMaleek sat, still sewing. Abdulhameed’s torn pants, pierced by the needle, were in her hands. She didn’t react—her years had not given her the strength to fight back.
